EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES


Our Curricular

The curricular used at the different levels of Nursery, Primary, Junior Secondary Schools and Senior Secondary School (SSS) are guided by the National Policy on Education. The curricular reflects the needs of the various schools, Nursery to Senior Secondary School. The Primary School graduates receive the Basic Education Certificate upon passing the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) organised by the State government while the JSS 3 graduates receive the Basic Education Certificate upon passing the Basic Education Certificate Examination organised by the National Examination Council (NECO) or the Edo State Government. The Senior Secondary School Students receive the Senior Secondary School Certificate upon passing the examination organised by NECO or WAEC.

THE SUBJECTS THAT WE OFFER

Senior Secondary School (SSS)

The National Policy on Education provides three categories of subjects offered by Senior Secondary School Students: Core subjects (6), Vocational electives (14) and Non-vocational electives. They are as follows:

A. Core Subjects

  1. English Studies
  2. Mathematics
  3. Civic Education
  4. One of Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Health Science
  5. One of Literature-in-English, History, Geography, Religious Studies.
  6. A vocational subject

B. Vocational Electives The National Policy on Education identifies 14 vocational electives. However, 5 of them are as follows:

  • Agricultural Science
  • Book-keeping and Accounts
  • Computer Education
  • Food and Nutrition
  • Commerce

C. Non-vocational Electives
  1. Biology
  2. Chemistry
  3. Physics
  4. Further Mathematics
  5. French
  6. Literature-in-English
  7. Economics
  8. History
  9. Geography
  10. Christian Religious Knowledge
  11. Government
  12. Every student is required to offer all the above six (6) core subjects plus 2 or 3 others (that is, minimum of 8 and a maximum of 9 subjects). During the first year of the senior secondary school programme, every student is expected to offer the six (6) core courses listed above and four (4) from the non-vocational electives, making a total of ten (10) subjects. The choice of career and aptitude should guide the selection of the electives.

    In the second year, i.e SSS II, the student has to drop one (1) of the chosen electives. Furthermore, at SSS III, the student may drop one of the three remaining electives, thereby having a total of eight (8) subjects (6 core and 2 electives) or nine (9) subjects (6 core and 3 electives).

    Junior Secondary School (JSS)

    The subjects offered at this level are as follows:

      •English Studies •Mathematics •Basic Technology •Creative and Cultural Art •Business Studies •Basic Science •Christian Religious Studies •Agricultural Science •Social Studies •Quantitative Reasoning •History •Civic Education •Edo Language •Computer Studies •Home Economics •French •Physical and Health Education.

      Note:

      The minimum number of subjects offered is 9 while the maximum is 10

      Three subjects are grouped together as Basic Science and Technology (BST): Basic Science, Basic Technology and Information Technology.

      Four subjects are grouped together as Religion and National Values (RNV): Christian Religious Studies, Social Studies, Civic Education and Security Education.

      Pre-Vocation Studies (PVS) curriculum comprises two subjects: Home Economics and Agricultural Science.

    Primary School

    The subjects offered at this level are as follows:

    Lower Basic Education (Primaries 1 - 3)

    2. Each of the components of BST serves as theme in the curriculum for the subject.

    4. Each of the components of PVS forms a theme for the curriculum (PVS).

    Middle Basic Education (Primaries 4 - 6)

    The subjects are:

    Pre - Primary Education

    At the nursery level, the subjects offered are as follows:

    Examination

    This comprises continuous assessment and end-of-term examinations. Continuous assessment is based on class work, written or oral tests, practicals, projects or homework. The examination forms 60% of each of end-of-term evaluation in both Junior and Secondary School classes. End-of term examinations are held at the end of each term. A minimum of 50% is regarded as pass mark. At the various levels, a pupil/student must meet the laid-down promotion criteria to advance to the next level.

    Counselling Department

    The Counselling Department assists students with selection of subjects and career path as well as deal with personal problems.

    Teaching Strategies

    These include teaching methods which range from lecture method, field trip (Excursion) and practicals, amongst others. Every period has a fixed time duration and the time-table is strictly adhered to.

    Assignments are given, marked and corrections are made after marking the assignments.

    Students are involved in project work either individually or in groups.
